Privacy Policy

Last updated: August 20, 2026 • Effective date: August 20, 2026

This privacy policy explains how Lunar ("the App", "we", "us") collects, uses, stores, and protects information when you use the App. Your privacy matters, and we are committed to being transparent about our data practices.

1. Overview

Lunar is an important lunar dates tracker. It lets you record festivals, anniversaries and birthdays by their lunar-calendar date and computes the correct solar-calendar date for every lunar year — because a lunar festival (e.g. Mid-Autumn, Month 8 Day 15) falls on a different solar date each year.

The App is a browser-based web application. Most of your data is stored locally in your own browser using local storage, and never leaves your device. If you choose to connect your Google account, the App uses the limited Google Calendar API to save your birthdays as events in a dedicated calendar that it creates for you.

2. Information We Collect

  • Lunar date data: The names, lunar months/days, leap-month flags, and notes you choose to enter (e.g. festival or anniversary dates).
  • Google account access (optional): When you connect your Google account, the App requests permission to access only a dedicated, app-created secondary calendar. It does not read your primary calendar, emails, contacts, or any other Google data.
  • Basic technical data: Standard browser information such as your device type and browser version may be used by third-party services (see Section 4) to deliver the App's functionality.

3. How We Use Your Information

  • To provide and maintain the App's core features (lunar → solar conversion and display of upcoming celebrations).
  • To synchronize your birthdays between the App and the dedicated per-year events it creates in your Google account, only when you explicitly choose to connect and sync.
  • To generate offline calendar (.ics) backup files that you can download and import into other calendar applications.
  • To notify you (via 9:00 AM calendar reminders) when lunar birthdays occur.

We do not sell, rent, trade, or share your personal information with third parties for marketing or advertising purposes.

4. Third-Party Services

The App relies on the following third-party services to function:

  • Google Identity Services & Google Calendar API: Used for optional account connection and synchronization of your lunar birthdays into per-year events in a dedicated calendar you control. Google's use of your data is governed by the Google Privacy Policy.
  • Tailwind CSS and Lucide Icons (CDNs): Used to render the App's styling and icons (cdn.tailwindcss.com, unpkg.com).
  • chinese-lunar (MIT): An open-source lunar data table (1900–2100) vendored in TypeScript and used client-side only; it never contacts a server.

The limited Google Calendar permissions requested (calendar.app.created and calendar.calendarlist.readonly) grant access only to secondary calendars created by this App, plus read-only calendar-list access solely to locate that app-created calendar by name. No other Google data is accessed.

5. Data Storage & Retention

  • Local storage: Your lunar date entries are saved in your browser's local storage so the App works offline. You can clear this data at any time by clearing your browser's site data for this app.
  • Google Calendar: If you opt in, your birthday details are stored as per-year events (with private extended properties) inside a calendar the App creates in your own Google account. You have full control over this calendar and can delete it or revoke access at any time.
  • Retention: The App does not operate its own servers or databases and therefore does not retain your data beyond your local browser storage and your own Google Calendar. Deleting a person, revoking access, or deleting the created calendar removes the corresponding data.

6. Your Choices & Controls

  • Connect or disconnect: Connecting your Google account is entirely optional. Disconnect at any time from within the App's Google Calendar config panel.
  • Revoke access: Revoke the App's access at any time via your Google Account permissions page.
  • Delete data: Delete individual dates in the App, clear browser local storage, or delete the dedicated calendar from your Google Calendar.

7. Children's Privacy

The App is not directed to children under 13 and does not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided personal information, please contact us so we can delete it.

8. Security

We take reasonable measures to help protect your information. Google account authentication is handled securely by Google's own OAuth 2.0 and Identity Services infrastructure. Data stored in your browser's local storage is not transmitted to any third party unless you explicitly initiate a cloud synchronization.

9. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Any changes will be reflected on this page with an updated "Last updated" date. We encourage you to review this policy periodically. Your continued use after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.

10. Contact Us

If you have any questions or concerns about this privacy policy or the App's data practices, please contact us using the support email address listed in the Google OAuth consent screen.
